Jackfruit (also called "Jakfruit") is a type of Fruit from the Republic of India (mostly Southern and eastern areas), Bangla-desh and Sri Lanka the young fru.. The major fruit varieties grown in Sri Lanka are mango, papaya, pineapple, avocado, banana, watermelon, rambutan, mangosteen, wood apple, guava, pomegranate and jackfruits. Banana, pineapple and papaya are commercially grown whereas other varieties of fruit come from home gardens for the most part.

Roadside fruit stalls with neatly stacked piles of dark-purple mangosteens and bunches of saffron-hued bananas hanging from a rafter is a familiar sight to us locals.. While some fruits are endemic to Sri Lanka, others originated from countries as far out as Mexico (cashew), and of course, from our regional neighbours India, Burma, and Malaysia. Research indicates that Sri Lanka is home to about 3,368 plant species belonging 1,294 genera, with 132 families identified.
