Albert and the Lion (also known as The Lion and Albert) was written by Marriott Edgar in 1930 for Stanley Holloway, who recorded it as a monologue in 1932... The Lion and Albert. There's a famous seaside place called Blackpool, Went there with young Albert, their son. The finest that Woolworth's could sell. Fact, nothing to laugh at at all. And old ale and sandwiches too. With the side of his face on the bars. Well, it didn't seem right to the child.

The Lion And Albert Poem by Marriott Edgar
Nature. There's a famous seaside place called Blackpool, That's noted for fresh air and fun, And Mr and Mrs Ramsbottom. Went there with young Albert, their son. A grand little lad was young Albert, All dressed in his best; quite a swell. With a stick with an 'orse's 'ead 'andle, The finest that Woolworth's could sell.. The lion of the poem is named "Wallace", which was the name of the first African lion to be bred in Britain, living from 1812 until 1838, and his name became a popular one for lions. Edgar gave the poem the title The Lion and Albert , but some later performances and re-publications used the form Albert and the Lion . [11]
